Getting Around in Edinburgh
Edinburgh Buses
More Edinburgh Photos
Getting There:
By air:
Edinburgh International Airport is 7 miles west of the city and this is where all airlines arrive. Express buses to the city centre leave just outside the arrivals terminal every 15 minutes and the return journey costs £5.
By train:
Waverly Train Station in the city centre is the main train station and where most of the trains arrive.
By bus:
If you decide to travel via bus, St Andrew bus station is just north of Princes Street. Buses from London and other places around the UK arrive here.
Getting Around:
On foot:
Thanks to Edinburgh’s layout and size, it is easy to get around on foot. You just need to remember this – the Princes Street side of the city is the ‘New Town’ and the castle side of the city is the ‘Old Town’. There are enough points of interest on both to attract you.
By bus:
Two main bus companies, LRT and First Edinburgh, provide transport around Edinburgh. Buses are cheap and frequent. Tickets can be purchased on the buses but you have to have exact change. Unless you are staying in the West End/Haymarket end of the city, you probably won’t have to utilise them that much. If you do, you can buy a Day Saver Ticket from the bus driver of the first bus you board.
One particular bus which you might want to use is the 15A from St Andrews Square as this brings you to Roslyn. This is where Roslyn Chapel from the ‘DaVinci Code’ is located.
By train:
Trains going north and west link Waverly and Haymarket stations, but it’s a lot cheaper to get the bus around the city.
By taxi:
It is never too difficult to hail down a taxi in Edinburgh, unless you are looking for one around 3am on a Friday or Saturday when thousands of revellers congregate on the city’s streets at the one time. When you do need one, they are fairly cheap and a journey around the city centre shouldn’t cost more than £5.
