From Highland Explorer Tours |
Tour Itinerary
DAY ONE: Heading north, we enjoy views of the Forth Railway Bridge and enter the Highlands via beautiful Perthshire, a land of forests, rivers and mountains. We enjoy the stunning Queen's View and then over the wild Drumochter Pass, through high mountains passing Dalwhinnie, home to Scotland's highest whisky distillery. We then enter ‘Monarch of the Glen’ country, and the captivating scenery and wildlife of The Cairngorms National Park. We head for atmospheric Culloden Battlefield, scene of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s defeat and the end of Jacobite Rebellion and then onto our overnight accommodation.
DAY TWO: We explore Inverness, capital of the Highlands, before heading for the wonderful West Coast including the charming village of Plockton. The highlight of the day is crossing over the sea to the wonderful Isle of Skye and our first sight of the jagged Cuillin Mountains. Soak up the scenery, atmosphere and history of this most special place. We explore to the picturesque harbour town of Portree before heading for our overnight accommodation.
DAY THREE: A full day exploring Skye, highlights include the mysterious Quirang mountain pass and a spectacular walk through some of Skye's extraordinary geological scenery, visit Kilt Rock, with it's waterfall cascading over the cliffs and into the sea below. Back on the mainland we visit the most photographed castle in Scotland, the famous stronghold Eilean Donan Castle, used in the film "Highlander".We then travel to mysterious Loch Ness and our overnight destination of Fort Augustus.
DAY FOUR: Follow the Loch Ness shoreline and head for historic Urquhart Castle, and famous Nessie sighting hotspot. In the afternoon we head west into Glen Affric, arguably Scotland’s most scenic glen. This is a wild and unspoilt landscape and one of the largest remaining pockets of native Caledonian pine forest.
DAY FIVE: In the morning you have the opportunity to take a boat cruise Nessie spotting on Loch Ness or visit the Clansman Centre. Our return journey passes Fort William in the shadow of Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. We continue our journey through dramatic Glencoe, scene of the infamous massacre in 1692; over the wilds of Rannoch Moor and into Rob Roy country. Stopping in the picturesque village of Killin to view the spectacular Falls of Dochart, fed by the high mountains above. Pass Medieval Doune Castle (set of Monty Python's "Holy Grail") and the ramparts of Stirling Castle, then on to Edinburgh, arriving in the evening.
